DESCRIPTION
Magnolia House is the rarest of Victorian homes: built in 1894, it is a spacious, bright house which was lived in by only ONE couple and their family for 120 years. The spacious entrance foyer greets you with its gilt French Rococo pier mirror, an antique from the Schilling estate, and one of two crystal chandeliers original to the home. There is a charming half-bath in the foyer.
The living room features a refined Rookwood tile fireplace, a lovely crystal chandelier original to the home, and large picture window with leaded glass. Pocket doors are all in pristine working condition. The spacious formal dining room has stained glass over French doors, which lead to a glass-enclosed heated and cooled screened porch for relaxing.
A traditional butler's pantry, with original glass doors and brass drawer pulls, leads out of the dining room into a warm and charming renovated kitchen wrapped with beadboard and fluted columns. Three large windows provide views and cross-ventilation. The kitchen has retained its original floors and its vintage Magic Chef gas stove/oven, which is in perfect condition! Modern touches include granite on counters and island, some new appliances, and custom cherry-stained cabinetry with soft-close doors and drawers. An old-fashioned walk-in pantry provides even more storage.
Finally, a restored walnut "servants' stairway" winds upward at the rear of the kitchen to the upper floors.
From the front foyer, an impressive master staircase ascends to the second floor balcony, which is flanked by a wall of leaded and stained glass windows. Suspended over the grand staircase is a wonderful Victorian-style 20-globe chandelier, which originally graced an historic local restaurant. The spacious balcony and a hallway leads to four lovely bedrooms, two with original gas fireplaces (not connected).
In 1929, the main bathroom received a total renovation by the historic Mosaic Tile Company of Ohio. Some updates are underway; however, for those who love vintage homes, the distinctive green floor and wall tiles, large reclining tub and sink with original porcelain taps, and the built-in soap dishes and towel bars all give a glimpse into the beauties of another age.
The third floor of Magnolia House offers a different esthetic with its clean lines of white walls, and grey trim and floors, in two spacious rooms. Rooftop and treed views abound from wonderful large windows.
Outside, the corner lot creates a wrap-around yard centered by a majestic old tree, old growth lilacs, and, of course, a stately magnolia. There is much potential here for planting and gardening.
This is a stunning and spacious home with great versatility, warmth, and a welcoming spirit throughout.
